Dixon, Wagner and Belken Lead the Way at I-55
Pevely, Mo. (August 14) -- Ed Dixon led all 25 laps of a late model feature that went nearly caution-free at I-55 Raceway Saturday. He took the lead on the first lap and didn't slow down until a spin brought out a caution flag on the 23rd lap.
The race was slowed for another spin on the 24th lap and ended in a bumper-car derby as the second- through fourth-place cars hit the finish line just as two lapped cars got tangled up to block the front straight. Steve Shive plowed through the jam to finish second. Ed Bauman and Mark Faust were third and fourth.
Faust was a heat and dash winner. Clay Bauman and Steve Karnes won the other heats.
Leroy Haney led a snarling swarm of modifieds for the first 16 laps of his feature before coasting to a stop on the back straight. That turned the lead over to Ray Wagner, who had started sixth. Wagner held off Kyle Steffens and Johns Seets Sr. for the final four laps to win his first feature at I-55. Kevin Gundaker and Scott Weber were fourth and fifth.
There were 44 modifieds entered Saturday, so five heats were necessary. The winners were Dennis Richards, John Campbell, Haney, Keith Grider and Seets. Richards also won the dash. He jumped the cushion and smacked the wall while runnning second in the feature and fell back in the pack.
The modified semi-features were won by Rich Whaley and Ray Walsh.
Paul Belken Jr. led the last three laps of the sportsman feature to boost his points lead. Dennis Wernle was second and Brian Worley was third. Mark Blanke, who led the first nine laps of the main event, ended up fourth. Doug Wood, who started the night second in points, climbed from the 17th starting position to come home fifth.
The sportsman heat winners were Troy Naeger, Worley, Blanke and Belken, who also won the dash. Daryl Dodge led the last-chance qualifiers out of the semi-feature.
Troy Conway and Chase Patterson won their sixth consecutive cruiser car feature.
A total of 109 race cars were entered Saturday.
