I-55 Raceway 2000 Season Point Standings
Through races held September 9th!
First-Timer Weber Joins Vets Dixon and Belken
On Top of Final I-55 Raceway Points for 2000
Pevely, Mo. (September 12) -- Scott Weber wrapped up the 2000 regular
season at I-55 Raceway Saturday with his first championship in the UMP
Modified class. Weber had never won a feature at Pevely until late in the
1999 season, but has dominated the modified class ever since.
Weber, of Festus, Mo., ended the season with a large points lead
over defending champion Dean Hoffman of Belleville, Ill. Ray Walsh of St.
Louis was third.
Saturday was the last night that track points were tallied at I-55
Raceway this season. The stock car racing year at the track ends this
weekend with the 18th Annual I-55 Pepsi Nationals on Friday and Saturday
(Sept. 15-16).
Former track champions Ed Dixon and Paul Belken Jr. both added
titles to their resumes this season.
Dixon, of Washington, Mo., swapped a lot of paint and positions
with Mark Oller over the course of 2000 and successfully defended his 1999
championship in the UMP Late Model class. Oller was second and Tim
Ratajczyk, of Columbia, Ill., was third.
Former modified track champion Darrell Hoffman of Belleville,
running his first full-season in the late model division at I-55, finished
seventh. Don Klein of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., now a 60-something with more
than 40 years of racing experience, was ninth.
Belken, the sportsman champion in 1998, faced the toughest battle
of any of this year's three champions. Scott Stuppy of Ste. Genevieve and
Doug Wood of Fenton held the points lead at various points in the season,
but Belken pulled out the title in the final weeks. Wood was second and
Stuppy, the 1999 champ, was third. Wood was the only non-champion to earn
more than 1,000 points.
Three sets of brothers cracked the top ten in point standings. Tim
Ratajczyk was third in the late model standings while Tom was eighth in the
modifieds. Darrell Hoffman was seventh in the late models and Dean was
second in modifieds. Brian and Sam Worley accomplished the feat in the same
class, coming in fourth and tenth in the sportsmen.
A total of 269 drivers are listed in the final points rundown for
the track, 71 in the late models, 84 in the sportsmen and 114 in the
modifieds.
A couple of NASCAR Winston Cup drivers show up in the final late
model points. The track's co-promoter, Ken Schrader, is ranked 26th. Johnny
Benson, who raced at Pevely once this year in his first race on dirt in
many years, is tied for 59th.
The regionalism of stock racing in the St. Louis area is reflected
in the home towns of the top ten drivers in each class -- 20 in Missouri
and 10 in Illinois. The fastest city in the region was Ste. Genevieve, Mo.,
with four drivers on the top ten lists. Placing three drivers in the top
ten were Festus and St. Louis in Missouri and Highland and Belleville in
Illinois.
